Valencia CF Fans Protest Following LaLiga Loss
The atmosphere at Mestalla is known for being one of the most intense in Spain, and that intensity has been directed towards one person for a long time: owner Peter Lim. After Valencia sank to the bottom of the table on Monday night, losing to Las Palmas, around 2,000 fans protested once again against Lim.
The Singapore-based magnate is reportedly open to selling the club, but his asking price has so far scared off any potential buyers, with a lot of debt and a new stadium that also needs to be paid for. Before the match, fans protested against Lim’s ownership and the arrests of two fans who placed ‘Lim, go home’ stickers in their native Singapore. After the match, around 2,000 fans, according to Cadena Cope, remained outside to express their discontent.
According to 3cat, a group of 250 fans allegedly charged at the police, and then the authorities also charged at the fans, clearing them from the street. Seven people have been identified as guilty of civil disobedience, while a 46-year-old man was arrested.
Firefighters were also called to extinguish a fire started in a container, as another sign of protest. It’s another proof of the toxic situation at the club, with fans long exhausted by Lim’s management and the lack of investment. As a private ownership club, however, it seems there is no end in sight for the situation unless a major investor gets involved.
